sixpenceee:

The Tohoku earthquake & tsunami was one of the worst natural disasters in Japan. Rikuzentaka, a town of 23,000 known for oyster farming, was hit hard. 8000 homes were washed away and the town was brutally destroyed. But after the tsunami, just one lone tree, 27 meters high and 200 years old, remained standing. The tree unfortunately died in 2012. The “tree” that now stands in the location is, in reality, a re-created sculpture that acts as a memorial to the tsunami’s victims. (Source)
